How to check gold purity at home
Gold is a valuable and precious material. Sometimes, it is a symbol of our family descendants and required to be kept safe. But gold value depreciates as it becomes old and one has to get it tested regularly by a gold specialist to know its purity and value in the market.
However, sometimes it becomes very tedious to find a reputed gold Valuer and pay for the price just to get it checked. Well, we have made it easier for you. We will tell you how you can check your gold’s purity at home and don’t have to look for another gold jeweler.
The hallmark jewellery is relatively easier to check than the jewellery pieces that do not have a hallmark. Hallmark is an impression made by the jeweller that it is genuine and crafted from genuine molten gold bullion. You can easily look for these marks or stamps on your Jewellery pieces. The stamp or mark includes the karat, also called the purity, of the piece, such as 14K or 24K. You can also look for the manufacturer’s
stamp which will tell its Genuity and original nature. If the jewellery does not contain any mark or stamp, then you need to
perform some tests to foretell its purity.
Check gold purity with Magnet test
Gold jewellery that is made of pure gold is non-magnetic and will not get attracted to magnets. However, imitation gold or an alloy that is mixed with other material shows paramagnetism and get attracted to some extent. Coins which are gold plated or seems like gold but are actually made up of different material can easily be attracted by magnets and that shows how impure they are.
Testing Gold’s purity by rubbing it against the stone
This test Comprises of rubbing the Gold against a stone, usually a black stone so that gold leaves a scratch or mark that is to be tested further. Now take some Nitric acid and drop a small amount of it on the scratch
part on the stone. If the gold is an imitation or impure then it tends to change its color to green. Whereas pure gold will not react to it and shows no colour change or chemical reaction. If one wants to check for
its purity further, then drop some aqua regia(a mixture of one part nitric acid and three parts hydrochloric acid). It is used to check higher purity gold.
Gold test using liquid foundation makeup
This is one of the easiest tests you could perform at home to check gold’s purity. Take some liquid foundation makeup and rub it on your hand. Wait till it gets dried. Now take the gold you want to check and put it on the liquid foundation mark that you have made. Pure gold will leave a line in the makeup. If you do not see a line, then the object is plated or another metal. This way you can easily be able to check the purity of your gold.
Check gold purity with Float test
Pure gold is denser and heavier than the imitation golf and it sinks to the bottom when placed in the bowl of water. But if your good item or pieces of gold jewellery floats on the surface of the water then it is safe to say that it is fake or plated, that is not pure. This is because its density is lower (14K is 12.9 to 14.6 g/ml, 18K is 15.2 to 15.9 g/ml, and 22K is 17.7 to 17.8 g/ml.). In some cases, the test might fail as the alloyed gold or fake gold could be heavier and tends to sinks to the bottom.
